The 107 model looks amazing, it even sounds exactly like the real one! If you wanna make it more linked to the rio grande I’d suggest painting it in the Durango & silvertons scheme

The D&S DLs are yellow and maroon to match the colors of the passenger cars. At least they retained the WP pattern. Nice update. Love them Tsunami2 decoders!! 😎👍🏻

Great video. Finally started blasting. I'm blasting at 60 psi and I'm not getting nearly the results you did! The Harbor hose did not fit my compressor so I used the one that came with my compressor. The nozzle hole in the sprayer is so tiny that I get about a 1/8 inch blast pattern. Took me 25 minutes to do one side of my Q2! Strange. I'll experiment since this is my first time using this equipment.
Hi I'm currently working on turning a Bachmann Berkshire into The Polar Express, just like this. I was wondering how you painted the front of the boiler and the smoke box door and what color did you use? thanks.
I used tru color graphite for the smoke box and boiler. I masked off the areas and painted. You could use a brush and paint it as well, just may not be as smooth.

I've got a few engines (Mantua & Tyco) that have open frame (Pittman) motors in them. I never change out the motors as the Pittman motors are just fine. What I do to improve them is change out the magnets to neodymium (rare earth) magnets and it made a HUGE difference in current draw and now they will "creep" around the tracks just like you guys' DCC step 1 speed. I only do DC as I hate the sound of HO DCC sound. It sounds way too tinny. O gauge DCC sound is much better. I guess the speakers are just so small in HO DCC. Cheers from eastern TN
I got my first brass diesel locomotive for Christmas this year. It's a Hallmark Fairbanks-Morse H12-44 and it came painted for the Central of Georgia (the road I model) livery. I've already taken it apart for servicing and adding LED headlight and red LED backup light. Got to take her apart one more time to add a couple of diodes to the LED's to keep them from flashing when the reverse current is applied. Have to wait for my diodes get here. I plan to buy more brass engines especially a few steamers. Nice to know how to paint 'em. Thanks for posting. Cheers from eastern TN

Ironically the silver paint that some people complained about looks like the rebuild that recently returned to revenue service. Hopefully with Atlas now producing this model there might be another run of the Caltrain scheme in the far future.
This gives me hope. Working on a PFM Union Pacific 2-8-0. Thanks again for the inspiration
why did you leave the trucks and wheels on the caboose?
This model the trucks I was afraid of breaking the castings buy prying the wheels out as they were soldered together. I did not remove them from the tender due to soldering a wire to the top of each of the trucks to bypass the frame to top of truck contact area for electrical pickup. Most models I will take the trucks apart as it makes for a cleaner paint job.

Regrettably, IKEA does not sell this any more. Not even anything similar, but the concept is great and I would be surprised if there is nothing in the market that has a similar approach. Could be it needs a DIY operation. Anyway, I loved your solution and the go-through of the basic tools.

Great Sn3 progress!
Didn’t realize the XPS foam could have waves on the surface. I’ve seen some at Lowe’s for the first time in my area and was thinking of getting some. For gluing track down on foam, @mpeterll said he was using something called Crafter’s Pick Ultimate Glue. He said it grabs the track and dried quickly, I think. I’m not finding it in stores near me though. This was in a video he did a couple years ago titled “laying flex track for model railroads” so not sure what he’s using now.

Unistrut allows you to mount the bracket anywhere in the channel. It makes setting the height easy and the same with leveling it out as well.

"Try Aileene's Tacky Glue" (from any craft store) for attaching your track to the cork roadbed or foam base. Great to see you "back on track" with Sn3!
It's hard to find the HO Scale Caltrain MP36PH on Ebay
I find it easier to wire wheel mine (ultra fine), it buff's it up so shiny that it creates a very, very strong bond. I then acid etch prime with a bit of heat. I find that model grade primer's don't stay on the model for very long.
Just got the Harbor Freight blaster today in the mail. Got an Ebay Pennsylvania Q2 duplex locomotive special ready to blast. So gkad I found your video!
Why does anyone need more than 1 PowerCab unless they have more than 1 layout (RIGHT !) that another person would run at the very same time (RIGHT !)... Far as your new wheel, it looks ergonomically as clumsy as the original..I admire your prowess, but no thanks..One day NCE will come out with a PCab with an improved speed wheel..Til then I'll stick with the original.

Spray can primer? This will never be as accurate, thin, or proper as using an air brush. Goes on too heavy as Martin pointed out.
